Healthy snails are active and so it's good to hear that James used to be active and climbing around his tank. Mine do this a lot and often rest underneath the lid. My tap water has very, very low levels GH and KH that it was causing issues with both my snails and shrimp. After adding cuttlebone to my tank I have not had a problem since.
